Life is a Balancing Act….Are You in Balance?

Have you ever had those days where you are certain you have overbooked your schedule and your time is no longer yours?  You somehow lost control and know your life belongs to your commitments and you feel overwhelmed?  It’s not the best feeling, but by quieting your soul in prayer and listening to the Holy Spirit , your balance can be restored.

Recently I spent some quiet time with God in an Emmanuel “God with us” Prayer, and Jesus shared with me a vision of a very violent and turbulent storm on the ocean.  He also showed me a gold tarnished scale that was tipped heavy to one side.

The first vision of the violent storm represented a recent storm I had encountered.  Next, He showed me a ship out on this ocean that was getting beaten by the waves.  It was dark.  Very dark skies and waters all around the ship.  The sky was filled with powerful thunder and lightning.  It was raining fiercely and this little ship was being beaten and battered from every direction.  It was still sailing on the water, but it had no control.  It was at the mercy of the waves crashing in on it.  The waves determined its course of destiny.  In Samuel 22:5  it reads “The waves of death swirled about me; the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me.”  I realized that little ship was me.  I realized Jesus was showing me what I looked like from His perspective when I was in the worst storm of my life years prior.  I was being battered from all directions and was in dangerous waters.  My life was being controlled by the storms of life instead of the hope found in Jesus Christ.

That vision Jesus gave me was a warning not to be ignored.  It gave me perspective into my life when I had gone through a deep depression and facing so many challenges.  He showed me that I had forgotten to keep Jesus as the center of my life.  The scale was heavily unbalanced.  I still knew Jesus.   I spoke of Him almost daily. But I no longer spent valuable time with Him.    Life was the “heavy” scale, weighted down.  And the other scale was “light” without the time spent with my Abba Father .   The outside world had no idea that I was in such turmoil, nor did I.  Until Jesus gave me a view from His perspective of what he watched me go through in life, I was unaware of the severity of the storm.  Isaiah 57:20 says “But the wicked are like the tossing sea, which cannot rest, whose waves cast up mire and mud.”  He was watching me all along and just waiting for me to reach out, to grab hold of His hand so He could calm the seas and give me rest in the storm.

He was warning me that when I entered back into the world, I could be beaten and battered by the waves of life if unprotected.   He reminded me not to forget where I have been so that I can learn the importantance of keeping Him in the center.  No matter the victories, no matter the struggles.  Without Him in the center, the devil is lurking to kill, steal and destroy us.  In Psalm 88:7   it says “Your wrath lies heavily on me; you have overwhelmed me with all your waves.”  The enemy will overwhelm us with the waves and storms of life when our eyes are not steadfast on Jesus.

Jesus is the Calmer of the storm. In Psalms 107:29  It promises us that “He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed.”  When you spend time with God, He will always show up and give us reflection, perspective, and direction.   During my vision, He showed me that currently my life was very balanced and that the scale tipped back and forth slightly,  but not to any great degree.  But He reminded not to be destracted by the things of this world and how easy it is to off balance without even realizing it.  The question isn’t necessarily the amount of activities scheduled, as much as if the activities are Christ centered and Christ appointed.

Jesus showed me that no matter what we add to our scales, if we have too much of anything, it can weight the scale down if we don’t focus on the One that balances the scale. He showed me Him standing there, waiting for me at the top center of the scale.  Calm, restful, patient, purposeful and full of Love.  He is the One that balances us.   In Proverbs 16:11 it says “Honest scales and balances belong to the Lord; all the weights in the bag are of his making.”    In Isaiah 40:12 it asks Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, or with the breadth of his hand marked off the heavens? Who has held the dust of the earth in a basket, or weighed the mountains on the scales and the hills in a balance

Ask yourself today, who and what is filling your schedule?  And are you balanced with Jesus at the top and center of your scale?  It says in Psalms 89:9  You rule over the surging sea; when its waves mount up, you still them.  Spend time daily with Jesus and He who rules over the surging seas will call them.Image result of sunny peaceful oceans

Your loving Heavenly Father

Praise Him Through It All!

Last night I sat amongst thousands at the Hillsong United concert as we worshiped in unity to a God that is bigger than any of our earthly perceptions and life’s worst trials  ….it was obvious in that arena that we believed in a powerful, merciful, forgiving  and loving God and the Holy Spirit’s presence and power in our lives.  Even in the dark, loud. synchronized dancing arena, I  heard the Holy Spirit speaking to my heart and soul.   He reminded  me of something I have spoken about in the past…..”We must learn to praise Him through all circumstances”.

This act of praise can be challenging when facing life’s greatest trials and painful experiences like personal or professional  disappointments, betrayal, illnesses, death of a loved one,…. but it is a step of faith that is truly a representation of Jesus Christ and an act of trust and recognition of His sacrifice for us!

Remember in the Garden of Gethsemane before Jesus was about to go to the cross? He was betrayed, overwhelmed with grief  that he sweat tears of blood.   It reads,  Jesus moved a little way from the three men to pray, and twice He asked His Father to remove the cup of wrath He was about to drink, but each time He submitted to the Father’s will. He was “exceedingly sorrowful unto death,” but God sent an angel from heaven to strengthen Him.  Luke 22:43.

Jesus suffered much more than any of us could ever suffer on earth, and yet while he suffered, and was exceedingly sorrowful, He submitted and surrendered to God’s Will.  When we can learn to submit and surrender to God’s Will, not only will be living in His will, but we can find victory in our lives and truly experience His perfect love and protection.  His promises are living promises!

Of course, the most important impact of this night was the willingness of our Savior to die on the cross in our place in order to pay the penalty for our sins. God “made Him who knew no sin, to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him”   2 Corinthians 5:21

Jesus last words on the cross, none is more important or more poignant than, “It is finished.” Found only in the Gospel of John, the Greek words translated “it is finished” means “paid in full.” When Jesus uttered those words, He was declaring the debt owed to His Father was wiped away completely and forever. Jesus eliminated the debt owed by mankind-the debt of sin-forever!   Do you accept His gift and sacrifice for you?

“IT IS FINISHED”.  Don’t let his sacrifice for you be in vein….He said “It is Done.”  He already bore your burdens. He already made a way for you to live within the Fruit of the Spirit.  The challenge we face on in this world is to recognize it and live accordingly in our daily lives.  Once we can learn it and apply it, it will become easier and our spirits will change.  How we handle life’s crisis will change our hearts, our minds and our souls.

In 1 John 5-7 it says “This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.”

Death no longer lives because of His sacrifice for us…..He conquered death in John 16:33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

He is the Prince of Peace….on earth as it is in Heaven.  We are victorious when we live in peace, not death and darkness…that is not God’s will.  He wants us to live victorious like we know, trust and appreciate His sacrifice and His promises.

Don’t listen to the lies of the enemy when life gets hard.  We don’t and shouldn’t live in life’s pain, chains , hurts and disappointments.  We should live like we believe in the sacrifice of the cross….His ultimate act of Love and Victory…for us to live victorious….without shame, guilt, pain and regret!  I encourage each of you to live today and everyday victoriously through His free and undeserved gift to you.  Learn to praise Him through it all.

RANDY’S LIFE: A legacy is created by action, not by words.

In honor of my Hero…..This is not to celebrate my brothers accident, but to celebrate his journey with God after his accident and share his legacy.  Legacy means something inherited from a predecessor; a heritage.  This is my inheritance story.

           2007-07-02 11.30.52-14 2007-06-13 14.04.41  2007-07-02 11.30.56-1

Forty years ago today, on September 18th, 1975 at age 15 my oldest brother Randall Scott Schaefer had a devastating football accident 12 days into his freshman year of High School in Colorado that would change the course of his life forever.  That Thursday evening at 5:10pm he took a tackle that would drop his body to the ground and he would never get up on his own two feet again.  But that tackle did not drop his spirit or diminish his love for life and his purpose on earth.

I honor my Hero today with all that I have, all that I know and all that I am.  He spoke to me through his life by his kind words, loving heart and Godly actions.  He was a 15 year old boy that became a man of God through his circumstances.  He loved God.  He praised God.  And his life reflected that of Jesus Christ.  He was my role model and taught me so much in life that I would later use in my professional career, personal life and ministry with testimony after testimony after testimony.  Who would know that he was scattering so many seeds by living his life with honor and humility reflecting the truth of Jesus Christ.  He was impacting my life through the seeds he planted while I was oblivious to his effortless example.   I am so proud of him and I am so thankful for his life on earth.  I am so thankful that he was my brother and I got to have him as my example to follow.   I know today he is running, jumping, playing football, laughing it up and hanging out with God in Heaven.   I know that when he met his Father, God said to him….”well done, good and faithful child.”  He changed so many lives and gave everyone he knew a glimpse of what HOPE looks like.  He displayed courage, faith, hope and thankfulness everyday!

His faithfulness was evident in his joy.  He always wore eyes of love and a smile of privilege despite his circumstances and challenges.  He always rose to every occasion with a great attitude and humbled himself before the Lord.  Instead of cursing the Lord, he surrendered his life to the Lord and gave thanks for his circumstances.  Was he thankful that he was paralyzed?  NO!  He was thankful for his life and his blessings.  He was grateful for a God that would love him so much He would send His one and only Son to bear the penalty for his sins.  Why did he believe that God had blessed him? Because he got to know so many people, inspire others that needed inspiring, influence children, and he believed because he was a shy kid, otherwise would not have experienced these things in the way he had.  He truly felt blessed.  Does one call him crazy? Delusional? Fearless? I call him WISE….filled with wisdom of the Holy Spirit!  He made every day count.  No excuses.  No self pity.  No regrets.  He just made every day count!

This young boy inspired so many people over the next 10 years of his life and is still affecting people 40 years later just by the mention of his name.  His memory lives in the hearts of all who knew him or knew of him.  Those who knew him would consider themselves fortunate to have known him and watch him live his life like he was the luckiest man alive.  I know this because just by the mention of his name I hear strangers repeat to me the things I have just spoken to you.  His legacy was created by his actions, not his words.

Do the words you utter matter? Or is it by your actions that speak of who you are?  If people hear you speak of one thing and your life speaks of another, what legacy are you leaving?   I believe it is the way you live your life full of gratitude, confidence, peace and humbleness that echoes a true legacy.  He was a force to be reckoned with and I wonder what his conversations are like with God today.   I celebrate you today Randy as I remember the day your life changed forever.  You are my Hero and I praise God for having you in my life!  Blessed to be a blessing.

Fear or Faith….Which will you choose?

Fear or Faith….which will you choose?  It’s a question we should ask ourselves more often.  When we don’t ask, we don’t choose.   God asks us to put our faith in Him.  He doesn’t give us a long list of “how to”, he says believe and if we step out, He steps up. He says in Isaiah 41:10 ” So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Relying on our circumstances or decisions, isn’t always acting in faith. it is a conscious decision and an uttering of words, whether silent or aloud, to God proclaiming our faith….even if fear is still a whisper in our ear and a nervous pounding in our hearts.  Can you imagine our Father hearing us utter those words….”I am trusting in you Lord!”  Imagine for a moment if you hear your own child in a fearful situation utter those words to you…would you let him or her fail?  Not likely.  Within your power, you would protect, guide, instruct, nudge and embrace.  Our father does the same for us when He knows we are trusting Him.

A friend of mine just recently adopted a baby girl and as she was first hearing the whispers of God in her ear direct her future steps with this little unknown baby girl, of course she experienced fear.  But after getting Godly counsel and spending time with God on the vision He had provided her, she was able to clearly advance in her decision to move forward in faith because she was affirmed by Him she was on the right path.  We all face these emotions of fear and we need to recognize that God removes our fear and restores our faith as we release it upon Him and proclaim His Promises.

I  think of so many stories in the bible where the fear of the men and women He called to do great things would stop them, make them hesitate in accepting God’s plan, but a voice or a sign would affirm their actions and they would proceed with full confidence and peace.  He always equips those He has called to high places.  If God is calling you to a new place for a new purpose, I encourage you to stop, seek and listen carefully for the signs and voices the Holy Spirit is giving you. Romans 11:29 for God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable.

Dreaming of a great future and victory in our lives and/or circumstances can be scary for so many of us.  We want success, happiness and to be an “overcomer”, but we fear our failures.  What if it I can’t achieve it?  What if God doesn’t want me to have it?  What if he is the wrong person to marry?  What if I’m not good enough?  Why me?  What if I shouldn’t adopt?  Will it be too hard?  What will I have to sacrifice?  What if the sacrifice is more than I am willing to give?  What if I get there and I don’t like it?  These are all the questions we ask ourselves in our mind…sometimes without even knowing it.  These are our fears and fear exists when we are not in God’s will.

Faith and fear cannot exist together. Faith is described in Hebrews 11:1 as being “certain of what we do not see.” It is an absolute belief that God is constantly working behind the scenes in every area of our lives, even when there is no tangible evidence to support that fact. On the other hand, fear, simply stated, is unbelief or weak belief. As unbelief gains the upper hand in our thoughts, fear takes hold of our emotions. Our deliverance from fear and worry is based on faith, which is the very opposite of unbelief. We need to understand that faith is not something that we can produce in ourselves. Faith is a gift in Ephesians 2:8-9 and is described as a fruit (or characteristic) which is produced in our lives by the Holy Spirit in Galatians 5:22.  The Christian’s faith is a confident assurance in a God who loves us, who knows our thoughts and cares about our deepest needs. That faith continues to grow as we study the Bible and learn the attributes of His amazing character. The more we learn about God, the more we can see Him working in our lives and the stronger our faith grows. Fear, and the lack of FAITH, can separate us from God and His will for our lives.

It’s scary when God calls us out to walk upon the waters in FAITH just like Peter in Mathew 14:25-31.  It reads: shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake.  When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.  But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”  “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”  “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.  But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”  Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”

Peter was able to overcome his fear only through FAITH.  When he had no fear of failure or doubt his FAITH carried him to amazing places and to do supernatural things.   But when he felt fear and took his eyes and FAITH off Jesus, he sunk within the waters.  His fear of the world was greater than his FAITH in Jesus…therefore his fear became reality.  Do you find your self sinking beneath the waters?  If so, keep your eyes on Jesus.  Place your FAITH in His promises and your fear will vanish and you will rise above the waters.  HE IS FAITHFUL.  HE IS FAITHFUL!

In Psalms 56:11 the psalmist writes, “In God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?” This is an awesome testimony to the power of trusting in God. Regardless of what happens, the psalmist will trust in God because he knows and understands the power of God. The key to overcoming fear, then, is total and complete trust in God. Trusting God is a refusal to give in to fear. It is a turning to God even in the darkest times and trusting Him to make things right. This trust comes from knowing God and knowing that He is good. As Job said when he was experiencing some of the most difficult trials recorded in Job 13:15. “Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him”  When we seek Jesus in prayer and truly surrender our lives and desires to His will and not our own, He is so subtle and yet so obvious in His prompting of us that we are on His path.

God is so good the way he shows up to confirm and reaffirm that you are in His will and on track with His teachings.  Let me show you how He spoke to me again this week in the most subtle and yet most obvious way.  This week, I had the privilege of speaking to a group of women from a local church and we discussed and celebrated being a “OVECOMER”.  I had prepared and prayed over my message for weeks, but that morning moments before I was leaving,  I was packing up and gathering all my materials when God spoke to me.  God directed my attention to something in my office that has been there for years.  He shifted my eyes up to one of my picture boards where I have four word figurines…they sit there from left to right….BELIEVE, FAITH, HOPE and DREAM.  I was amazed when I saw them because my message I had prepared of Overcomer is based on the difference of BELIEVING in Him and BELIEVING Him.  The message was based on FAITH, real FAITH, 100% FAITH like David showed against Goliath kind of FAITH…no shadow of a doubt FAITH.  The message was based on the teaching that through BELIEVING, requiring 100% FAITH, is the only place where we can fully embrace real HOPE.  I immediately praised God for His amazing faithfulness to me, knew the message was His will,  grabbed those word figurines for the lesson, packed them up and off I went to teach. As I was driving away I praised Him for the tools he had just given to me to teach these sisters in Christ the lesson He had put on my heart!  Thank you Lord for your faithfulness!

The next morning I went to unpack my briefcase and when I went to put them back on my photo board where they had lived for the past ten years….God showed up again!  As I look up to put them back in their place, the photo board is off-centered…. leaning to the right with DREAM sitting there all by itself…just about ready to fall off the shelf, land on the floor and probably break.  God clearly said to me and literally “showed” me A DREAM cannot stand alone without BELIEVE, FAITH and HOPE.  He was so subtle I could have missed it.  And yet He is so obvious if we are aware of His presence and pay attention when He calls us to look and listen!  If we are not ready to receive Him,  we will miss Him.  For HE IS WITH US!  In Mathew 1:23 the Bible tells us The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means God with us).

blog 1                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          The DREAM was off balanced!   How many times in our life are we off balanced because we pray, HOPE, DREAM and desire but we don’t hold steadfast to the first three Godly principles that are the most important ….BELIEVE, FAITH AND HOPE.  How many times in our lives do we cry out to Jesus “HELP ME”……. “SAVE ME” just like Peter on the water?   We don’t balance our cries with BELIEVE, FAITH and HOPE.  Do you want to walk upon the waters?  Do you want to transform your life?  Do you want to change the lives of your children’s children?  Then let’s take a lesson from Peter….Jesus told him and He is telling us…”You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”  Don’t doubt.  Instead remember this….BELIEVE + FAITH + HOPE = DREAM!

As I put those powerful words back up to their rightful place I heard God say to me….”Well done child”.  And he asked me to take this lesson a step further.  When speaking with my sisters in Christ about overcoming the troubles of this world and I think the word DREAM defines it well.  We DREAM of overcoming the troubles of this world.  We DREAM of greatness, peace, joy, happiness, security, faithfulness, success, contentedness.   In the world we learn that to “DREAM” you must write your goals down, but in the Bible it tells us we should proclaim the DREAM to our God through prayer and petition with complete FAITH.  If it is His will, then He is faithful.  It tells us in scripture, that if you ask for a prayer, you must believe it true…Mark 11:24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.  We must have FAITH in our Father’s goodness and abundance for our lives.   Then we can receive the HOPE without any doubt that our DREAMS will be fulfilled.   Sometimes those DREAMS result differently than our worldly visions, but if we are truly in God’s will, his DREAMS for us are much bigger and better for us than we could ever imagine.  Trust was another word we discussed and how so many times when we go into prayer with FAITH, we say we BELIEVE, but we really don’t BELIEVE wholeheartedly….we have doubt and doubt allows the enemy to lay foothold and tear our DREAMS down with his evil desires and intent.  In John 10:10 the Bible says the enemy comes to steal, kill and destroy.  We cannot let the enemy destroy our living God’s design and purpose for our lives here on earth.

What is God’s plan for you ?  Do you desire to overcome and live life on earth as it is in Heaven?  Do you want to take a step out upon the waters and DREAM today?   Do you want to BELIEVE fully and have unwavering FAITH of his power and abundance…Do you want to have unconditional HOPE in His good plans of HOPE and a future for your life as He promises in Jeremiah 29:11?  Seek Him, pray and commune with Him and read His word!

I pray that you will remember these powerful words that God gave me when you are broken and want to overcome your circumstances of this fallen world….

                    BELIEVE + FAITH + HOPE =  DREAM
